On Tuesday (May 21), Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that 24-year-old Javone Duncan was given 15 years in prison for shooting 17-year-old Rae’Lynn Cameron once in the chest and killing her after she turned down his advances two years ago. On March 25, 2024, the Brooklyn man was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
According to the evidence shared by the D.A., the defendant, who was 22 at the time, approached the 17-year-old at a party on Elderts Lane in East New York around 10:55 p.m. on October 2022. The man proceeded to hit on the teenager, however, she turned him down, allegedly telling him, “suck my d**k,” as he tried to make advances. The rejection enraged the man so much that he pulled out a loaded pistol, pointed it at the victim, pulled the trigger, shot her in the chest, and fled the scene, leaving her to bleed out.
The D.A. also said that before he gunned down the 17-year-old girl who rejected his advances, the Brooklyn man had pointed the same gun at another young woman at the party and taunted her by clicking the safety of the gun on and off. However, he was told by other partygoers to stop pointing the loaded weapon at people because it was dangerous. After the 17-year-old’s death, the man was arrested on October 26, 2022 and has now been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Speaking after the sentencing of the Brooklyn man, Kings County District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said, “This senseless shooting took the life of a young woman with a bright future. Today’s sentence holds the defendant accountable for his actions and is a measure of justice for the victim’s grieving family.”

During an emotional victim impact statement, Cameron’s mother, Cassandra Adams, asked that no mercy be shown toward her daughter’s killer, whom she said callously took “a diamond, a gem, a powerful force” from her family. The mother added, “Since this senseless crime, I have been broken beyond words. Not even a guilty verdict can heal the pain that I will endure for the rest of my life. I never dreamed of being rich as I was already rich with having my children.”
Adams continued to explain how her “beautiful, smart, intelligent, dancing diva” of a daughter will never be able to grow up to become “the phenomenal woman I raised her to be.” She further advised the judge and jury, “Please consider all the consequences and the suffering that we as the victims and families of the victim have gone through and continue to go through just because this grown adult made a bad decision.”
