The accused has been identified as Dr. Raihan Sharif, a lecturer at the Shaheed M. Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital in Sirajganj, a city in northwestern Bangladesh. On Monday (March 4), the professor was conducting an oral exam with his class of about 45 students. At some point, the professor reportedly got into an argument with one pupil, identified as 23-year-old medical student Arafat Amin Tomal.
Reportedly, the third-year student was being reprimanded for not attending the previous day’s class. The student claimed that the professor would often call him and other students to come in, despite no classes being officially scheduled. In this case, that’s what happened. The professor called him and others in on Sunday afternoon, and no one showed up.
During the altercation, Dr. Sharif allegedly pulled out a firearm and said, “This is my pet bird,” before firing a round that hit the student in the right knee. Fortunately, the force of the bullet was minimized as it hit the student’s cell phone, which was in his pants pocket. Although he was spared life-threatening injuries, the gunfire was still severe enough to send the wounded medical student to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains under medical care.

Reports said that immediately after the incident, all 45 students who were present locked the professor inside the classroom and called the police. Following the incident, police said they seized two pistols, 81 rounds of bullets, four magazines, two knives, and 10 daggers from a bag in the professor’s possession. Additionally, it was reported that the firearm allegedly used in the incident was “an illegal pistol.”
Local law enforcement officials reported that Dr. Sharif was notoriously known for carrying firearms and knives. They alleged that he would often show them during lectures as a way to threaten his students and keep them in line. To note: Bangladesh has a strict gun regulation policy, which only allows citizens above the age of 25 to carry firearms with a valid license.

On Wednesday (March 6), two days following the incident and the Bangladesh professor’s arrest, the Health Ministry suspended him from the medical college after protests by students demanding his immediate dismissal and severe punishment. Since Dr. Sharif’s arrest, he’s been sent off to prison, where he remains in judicial custody pending an investigation in at least two cases filed against him.
It’s reported that Dr. Sharif was previously served two show-cause notices based on complaints from his students. Additionally, before the latest student-involved incident, Dr. Sharif was previously fired from the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital following allegations of threatening a senior colleague at gunpoint.
