The 70-year-old from Uganda recently gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, after undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Her remarkable journey has made her one of the world’s oldest new mothers, and her story has touched the hearts of many. “There is no way to express my joy at this moment,” said Namukwaya to AFP. “At 70 years when I’m considered weak, unable to get pregnant and deliver, or look after a baby, and here is a miracle of the twins,” she told the news outlet by phone.
The arrivals of her babies came last Wednesday via cesarean section at the hospital in the capital Kampala where she had been receiving in vitro fertilization treatment, said Arthur Matsiko, spokesman for the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center. Speaking on her health since giving birth, Matsiko said, “She’s healthy. She’s talking. She’s walking around if they tell her to walk around the hospital,” Matsiko.
Namukwaya, who had a daughter at the same facility in 2020 following IVF treatment, is now the oldest woman to deliver a baby at the hospital, whose proprietor is a prominent gynecologist in the East African region. The hospital specializes in helping couples who struggle to have children naturally.

How Are The Babies Doing?
The babies were born prematurely at 31 weeks and placed in incubators, according to BBC. However, the mom of three says her new babies are in overall good health.
IVF has been the best method for her as she explains she was mocked as a “cursed woman” who had previously failed to produce a child. She said her first husband died in 1992, leaving her without children, and she met her current partner later in 1996.
Sadly, Namukwaya shared that her partner has not visited her since she came to the hospital for the delivery. “Maybe he is not happy that I delivered twins because men don’t want to know you are carrying more than one child in a womb for fear of may be responsibilities that come with that,” she explained.
