Dwyane Wade Says Florida’s LGBTQ Policies Made Him Move His Family: “My Family Would Not Be Accepted Or Feel Comfortable There”

Dwyane recently did an interview with Rachel Nichols for a new episode of Headliners and revealed he moved his family out of Florida due to the LGBTQ policies in the state.

“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state,” the NBA legend shared. “A lot of people don’t know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions,” he continues. “I mean, obviously, the tax [situation] is great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And so that’s one of the reasons why I don’t live there.”

A lot of people praise Dwyane Wade for being an awesome father and later in the interview he credited his dad for the way he raises his kids.”I tell my dad all the time, I’m just a mirror image of the way he loved us and the way that he accepted not only myself and my brothers but other kids in the community that didn’t have father figures,” Wade said. “And so I don’t know any difference. And so yes, I had to educate myself and yes, I had to get a better understanding. And yes, I had to lose some friends along the process, but I never wavered on loving my kids and trying to find space to get the chance to understand them.”

In the past, Wade has previously expressed his concern for his daughter, Zaya’s well-being, such as last year at the Time100 Gala and Summit event when he revealed his biggest fears associated with her transition.

“As blessed as it is for my daughter to have parents who can support her, I’m still afraid every moment she leaves the house,” he said. “And not just because of gun violence, but because of the way people perceive her in this world.” He also previously addressed states such as Louisiana enacting controversial trans sports bans, which has since become a reality in Florida — where Wade purchased a $19 million dollar mansion for his family in 2022.

The family’s troubles in The Sunshine state don’t end there either. Earlier this month, Union spoke about criticizing Disney for the company’s lack of response to Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis signing the Parental Rights In Education bill in 2022 at the premiere of the Disney+ movie Cheaper by the Dozen — in which she stars in the role of the character Zoey Baker. Alternatively known as the “Don’t Say Gay,” bill, the legislation now prohibits teachers from teaching children about sexual orientation or gender identity “in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate.”
