Twitter has probably never been as active as it was on Thursday when news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death was announced by Buckingham Palace. Memes have flooded most people’s timelines from Black Twitter making jokes that have even seen stars such as Cardi B jokingly saying they were refraining from using the social app because they didn’t want to go to hell.
And as the jokes and memes continue to go viral, D.L. Hughley has spoken out about his thoughts on the lack of humanity people have shown to a woman who, outside of being the longest-running monarch in Britain, was somebody’s family member. “I think that anybody that holds the idea that you can’t be sad for somebody when they pass on,” the comedian expressed, per TMZ. “I think lacks a level of humanity.”

“I’m not a monarchist but I can see—even if you ain’t a queen. Somebody lost their grandmother and their mother. Somebody lost a dear family member.” Further on, the 59-year-old Virginia native believed that the lack of compassion many have shown in a time of mourning and grief shows that people are disconnected from showing solicitude. While the Queen may have been part of “problematic” ideals, her death meant that her “race was over” and “whatever she’s done, she’s gon’ be judged for,” he added.
Her Majesty passed away on Thursday afternoon at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she was later joined by a string of her closest family members, including her daughter Princess Anne, the newly-titled King Charles III, and Prince Harry, who arrived at Aberdeen airport an hour after news of his grandmother’s passing was shared to the public.
King Charles III has since returned to Buckingham Palace where he made his first speech in his new role while addressing the death of his “darling Mama” in a televised special to Great Britain.
“I pay tribute to my mother’s memory and I honor her life of service,” the King said “Throughout her life, Her Majesty The Queen – my beloved Mother – was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family, and we owe her the most heartfelt debt any family can owe to their mother.

“Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived; a promise with destiny kept and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today.”
The King became visibly upset as he held back his tears to finish off his speech, adding, “As you begin your last, great journey to join my dear late papa, I want simply to say this: Thank you. Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years.”
