Biden announced the update in a statement shared Wednesday. The President said, “Now, while our jobs recovery is one of the strongest ever. We know that millions of student loan borrowers are still coping with the impacts of the pandemic and need some more time before resuming payments. Given these considerations, today my Administration is extending the pause on federal student loan repayments for an additional 90 days — through May 1, 2022 — as we manage the ongoing pandemic and further strengthen our economic recovery.”

Following the news, AOC tweeted, “Thank you! Next stop: cancellation,” while her squad-mate, Rep. Ilhan Omar chimed in, “Great, now cancel it!” Bernie Sanders added, “I applaud President Biden for once again pausing federal student loan payments for 45 million Americans. Now let’s cancel it. All of it.”

Now, although Biden campaigned on student loan cancellation as a presidential candidate, it’s still unclear whether he’ll use his executive authority to make it happen. However, during a Dec. 14 press conference, Press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden indicated waiting on Congress to act on student debt forgiveness while the president’s authority to cancel debt is “under review” by the Department of Education, Fox News notes.
