Japan To Begin Dumping Nuclear Waste From Fukushima Into Ocean In 2 Years

Officials at the Tokyo Electric Power Company in Japan have recently approved the dumping of nuclear waste from their Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean in the next 2 years.

It is reported that officials plan to release more than one million tonnes of contaminated water from the destroyed nuclear plant — but, they add that the water will be treated and diluted so radiation levels are below those set for drinking water. It is said that reactor buildings at the power plant were damaged by hydrogen explosions, which were cause by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Three of the reactors melted down after a tsunami knocked out cooling systems.

Moreover, combatting the controversial move is the local fishing industry and environmentalists, in addition to officials in China and South Korea. Furthermore, the final approval comes after many years of back-and-forth and its process is said to take decades to complete. #Socialites, thoughts?
