Big Sean Says Hit Song ‘IDFWU’ Was NOT A ‘Diss’ Towards Ex-Fiancée Naya Rivera

In a new interview with Vulture, rapper Big Sean talked about many things including his upcoming album Detroit 2, as well as a few rumors that have followed him in his music career.

One rumor that he addressed was about his hit song “IDGFWU,” the popular breakup anthem which many believed was about his ex-fiancée, actress Naya Rivera. As we previously reported, the two began dating in 2013 before calling off their engagement in 2014 amid rumors that the rapper had cheated. Although the couple had a rocky relationship, Sean is making it clear that the track was not about the late star, who died in July after a boating accident.

While speaking with the magazine, the 32-year-old said:

“I don’t feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her,” he confesses. “She’s made such an impact on people, and she’s done so many great things in her life and her career that it was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her. It wasn’t a diss to her. I truly made the song and played it for her. She knew about it, and she liked it. We had a breakup that was very public, and we were young and we forgave each other and moved on from that.” He added, “If I would have known something this tragic would have happened, I would have never made the song.”

Despite all the rumors about their relationship, the rapper proved that he still had love for Naya as he wrote a lengthy dedication to his former partner, who sadly drowned in California’s Lake Piru while saving her son:

“I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person,” he wrote. “I’m still grieving and in shock, I can’t believe this is real. I’m praying for you and your family and I know your watching over them and protecting them. Rest In Peace Naya 💙🙏🏾.”
