The news notes that the 36-year-old hit this mark after Facebook’s shares surged on news that it was going to launch a rival to the video-sharing app TikTok. CNN reported that Facebook’s stock climbed 6.5% Thursday, a day after the company officially launched its TikTok clone, Reels, on Instagram.

The launch of Instagram Reels came a day before President Donald Trump announced that he is making a move to sign an executive order to deal with the “threat” of TikTok, which will ban US companies from transacting with its parent company ByteDance when it comes into effect later in 2020.

Zuckerberg, who co-founded Facebook from his Harvard dorm room in 2004 and has a 13 per cent stake of the company spoke on the controversy surrounding the original video app. Despite launching a rival platform, he said: “I just think it’s a really bad long-term precedent, and that it needs to be handled with the utmost care and gravity whatever the solution is,” he said. “I am really worried … it could very well have long-term consequences in other countries around the world.” Mr Zuckerberg added.

Meanwhile, Facebook is currently banned in China, where ByteDance is based, alongside Google and other apps created by technology companies in the US, Independent notes.
