19-Year-Old Sex Trafficking Victim Chrystul Kizer, Accused Of Killing Abuser, Freed On Bail

Chrystul Kizer, a 19-year-old sex trafficking victim, has been freed on bail after being jailed for killing her alleged 34-year-old white abuser at 17 years old. On Monday, Kizer, of Milwaukee, was released from jail, now awaiting trial, after serving nearly two years behind bars for the fatal shooting of Randall P. Volar III in June 2018, to which she confessed and is facing a life sentence for.

After a year of abuse, Kizer affirms she acted in self-defense when she shot Volar in the head twice, and proceeded to set his house on fire. The events occurred after he drugged her and pinned her down, attempting to rape her. Her bail was initially set at $1 million, then reduced to $400,000 in February after several advocacy groups protested and petitioned. Eventually, the groups, including the Chrystul Kizer Defense Fund, Milwaukee Freedom Fund and Chicago Community Bond Fund, were able to raise the money to see her release. While a trial date has yet to be set, a status conference is set for September.

Kizer and Volar met at 16 and 33 after she posted an ad on a website, which FBI say is a forum for prostitution. After meeting up, for a year he allegedly sexually abused her while giving her cash and gifts. Police confirm evidence, some on video, that he’d been abusing multiple underage black girls. He was arrested and charged, but later released on bail. In June 2018, Kizer fatally killed Volar, set his house on fire and fled in his BMW after he tried to assault her. She was charged with arson and first-degree intentional homicide, which carries a mandatory life sentence in Wisconsin.

While the prosecution affirms the murder was premeditated, a plea deal to reduce charges from first-degree intentional homicide to felony murder is on the table. If Kizer is convicted, it’s unlikely she’ll serve decades in jail, especially with her young age and abuse suffered taken into account.
