In a statement posted fo the official USMC Twitter account, The Marine Corps explained: “The Confederate battle flag has all too often been co-opted by violent extremist and racist groups whose divisive beliefs have no place in our Corps.” Marine Gen. David Berger originally announced the ban of the flag from Marine Corps bases back in February. They made it official on Friday.

The Marine Corps becomes the first branch of the US military to order the removal of depictions of the flag. This includes bumper stickers, clothing, mugs, posters, and more.

This latest move comes as people across the U.S., protest over the death of George Floyd, police brutality and racial inequality, which have sparked both protesters and city officials to remove, deface or announce plans to take down many Confederate memorials.
