BET Founder Robert Johnson Demands $14 Trillion In Reparations For Slavery

Yesterday, the founder of BET (Black Entertainment Television), Robert “Bob” Johnson, argued that “now is the time” for white America to acknowledge the damage done to black America since slavery, and called for the U.S. government provide $14 trillion in reparations.

Noting how the wealth divide and police brutality against blacks sit at the heart of protests following last week’s  killing of George Floyd, Johnson, 74, says, “Now is the time to go big. Wealth transfer is what’s needed. Think about this. Since 200-plus-years or so of slavery, labor taken with no compensation, is a wealth transfer. Denial of access to education, which is a primary driver of accumulation of income and wealth, is a wealth transfer.”

Johnson adds that the money would reduce the “systemic racial inequality” that stems from our nation’s history. He then rhetorically asks, “Is $14 trillion too much to ask for the atonement of 200 plus years of brutal slavery, de facto and de jure government-sponsored social and economic discrimination and the permanent emotional trauma inflicted upon black Americans by being forced to believe in a hypocritical and unfulfilled pledge that ‘all men are created equal’?”
