Coronavirus Death Toll In Italy Passes 10,000, Cases Near 100,000

While the United States leads the world in confirmed coronavirus cases, nearing 120,000, those in Italy reach 94,472, as their death toll totals 10,023 — with over 969 confirmed deaths on Friday (Mar 27), the biggest single-day jump yet.

The European country is by far the hardest-hit nation for fatalities, beating China, the origin of the virus, which shows 3,177 deaths, per data via Johns Hopkins University and Medicine.

Although Italy’s number appear extremely grim, officials from the Italian Higher Health Institute say that the nationwide quarantine — which has been enacted for the past six weeks — is proving to work; showing a reduction in daily cases each day. The pandemic itself has now killed over 30,438 people across the globe, with at least 139,263 recoveries.

Additionally, following Italy in amounts of death, is Spain; which shows at least 5,820, with more than 832 patients passing within the past 24 hours.

Speaking on the high numbers in Italy, Dr. Massimo Galli, head of the infectious disease unit at Sacco Hospital in Milan, says, “[The number of confirmed cases is] not representative of the entire infected population.”

He adds, however, “We have a national healthcare system that works very well, especially in Lombardy — but even our system has been hit by this. Miracles have been done in multiplying the numbers of beds in hospitals. [But medicine] has been lacking — and this is a big problem that will be felt by other countries.”
