9-Year-Old Suspended From School After Seen With BB Gun In Room During Online Class
A 9-year-old Louisiana student has been suspended from school after a teacher reported seeing a gun — which turned out to be a BB gun — in the boy’s bedroom during a recent online class session.
On September 11, Ka Mauri Harrison, a fourth grader at Woodmere Elementary School in Jefferson Parish, was taking a test when one of his siblings stepped or tripped on a BB gun, which was gifted to Ka Mauri. Stepping out of the camera’s frame, the 9-year-old went to pick up the gun. Stepping back in, he was seen holding the gun and placing it next to him in his chair as he went to finish his test. With his microphone on mute, plus the sound muted on his computer so he could concentrate, he missed his teacher trying to call his name to question him about where he was going, and later about the gun.

As the teacher continued to call Ka Mauri’s name, it’s reported that “the student was disconnected from the screen due to internet issues.” Subsequently, the school tried to reach his parents, but to no avail; leading them to call his grandfather (the emergency contact) to tell him the child had a gun during the virtual class. Following the events, the school held a hearing and found Ka Mari guilty of “possession of a starter gun, stun gun and/or facsimile,” and recommended he be expelled. The school later amended the recommendation to suspension for six days, plus social work assessment.
The Harrison family attorney Chelsea Cusimano stated that Jefferson Parish Schools “took an on-campus weapons policy and unilaterally determined that they were going to apply it to one of their students in a manner as if he was on campus and not consider any measures such as the privacy of his own home.”
