9-Year-Old Girl Becomes The Youngest Person To Die From COVID-19 In Florida

A Florida community is left heartbroken over the loss of a sweet little girl who sadly died after battling COVID-19.

According to the New York Post citing WTLV, little Kimora “Kimmie” Lynum died in her sleep at her Gainesville home on the night of July 17, becoming the youngest person in Florida to succumb to the illness. Relatives of Kimmie told the local news outlet that aside from the virus, she was a healthy little girl with no underlying health conditions when she came down with a raging fever: “She was a happy child, but she didn’t even get to live her life,” cousin Dejeon Cain said. “She was doing good at one point, and all of a sudden she had a situation with a fever,” Cain added.

As the NYP reports, Kimmie’s mother took her to the hospital for treatment, but she was sent home, according to relatives. She collapsed a short time later and died after her heart failed. Sadly, the family does not know how Kimmie caught COVID-19, saying she had stayed home all summer and hadn’t been in contact with anyone known to have the virus. Local health officials confirmed the child’s death, with records showing her case was not travel-related, according to WCJB.

Cain said she was her mother’s only child. Her father, Theophilus Lynum, was shot and killed in April. “She was an incredible kid.” The family has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral arrangements.

As the news site notes, Kimmie is the fifth child to die of COVID-19 in the state. So far, over 5,000 people have died from the virus in Florida.
