An elderly Tennessee woman was arrested after she shot a man she thought was a thief.

According to The Charlotte Observer, 88-year-old May Boyce was released on a $10,000 bond after being charged with aggravated assault. The Nashville resident was supervising her liquor store when she mistook Ramon Fisher as a thief and shot him on Murfreesboro Plaza.
Boyce told investigators that two Black men entered her store Murfreesboro Road Liquor and Wines then walked behind the counter where bottles of vodka were located. She claimed that one of the men approached in a way where she knew he was going to rob the store.
“Ms. Boyce stated that she pointed the gun towards the ground, in the victim’s direction, and fired once. “The victim yelled out that he had been shot and fell into a stack of bottles.”

Fisher was transported to Vanderbilt hospital after the shooting but is expected to recover from his injuries. Investigators claim he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he explained his side of events but had a different story the following day:
“He stated that he was not going to steal any liquor, [and] that his friend, the unidentified male … told him to take the liquor, that he was going to pay for it,”
