Senior citizen Betty Cartledge decided to cast her vote on Wednesday in Covington for the first time after her husband’s passing in April 2023.

She said she and her late husband never voted because he didn’t think she should. According to WSB-TV, casting her first vote became a reality when her niece suggested helping her register. Cartledge initially thought she couldn’t vote because she couldn’t read or write, but she was thankful for someone to help her.
“I was so young and everything when we got married, I never really thought about it. And then I got old and I thought that it wouldn’t count to vote,” she explained. Social media users were shocked to learn that Cartledge’s husband had suppressed her right to vote, causing her story to go viral quickly

ABC News reported that Cartledge and her niece went to the Covington Mills Precinct to vote, but she expressed hesitation at the beginning.
“We went in, and my niece explained that I couldn’t read or write, and the poll workers guided us through the process. I did it all on my own-no one told me who to vote for. I just listed as everything was read to me, and the made my choices.”
Cartledge did not reveal who she voted for but said she would turn 82 on Sunday.
“If I’m still here next year, I’ll be back,”
