The incident occurred on Thursday (Aug. 18) at the South Shore Plaza mall in Braintree, Massachusetts, which is about 14 miles south of Boston.

Family members and pedestrians say the elderly woman was attempting to find the Apple store when she drove her white Lincoln MKX through automatic doors and onto a pedestrian bridge, which connected the parking garage to the second floor of the shopping mall.

Now, if you are wondering how she got through the automatic doors, and where are the barricades to prevent her from doing so, there’s a good reason.

Local authorities say, “Due to a recent accident, one of the safety bollards was missing from the front of the entrance.” Officials also added, “The bollard was already scheduled to be replaced by mall management and will be done as soon as possible.”

Once inside the mall, the woman turned left down a wing, traveling nearly 60 yards down the mall’s central corridor, and the woman came to a stop just outside the Torrid store, about four stores south of where she entered and turned left.

One witness, named Janet Parsons, said the woman asked her, “Do you know how to get out of here?” They replied, “Stay right here. I’ll get somebody.” But the woman kept driving forward. She added, “It’s a blessing that no one got hurt.”

Between surveillance video and footage circulating the internet from other mall shoppers, the SUV is seen driving slowly through the mall, hitting a shopping cart dock, reversing and then going around the dock to continue on its way, before making that stop at the Torrid clothing store.

When local police officials confronted the woman, they had described her as “confused” in their preliminary statement. Later, they described her as “elderly.”

They also confirmed that the woman had spoken with a mental health clinician on the scene prior to being taken to the hospital for additional evaluations.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the Registry of Motor Vehicles has suspended the woman’s license. No charges have yet to be filed.

Despite, motor vehicle officials confirming that they would be suspending the woman’s license, her sister also added that the family would make sure that “she won’t be driving anymore.”
