According to The Washington Post, the 57 members of the unit resigned from their positions after two officers were suspended for pushing 75-year-old Martin Gugino to ground in front of Buffalo City Hall. The incident went viral after the officers were caught on camera pushing the elderly protestor to the ground and ignoring him as he was bleeding.
Buffalo Police Benevolent Association president John Evans said in a statement that the officers “resigned in disgust because of the treatment of two of their members, who were simply executing orders”

The officers did not quit the police department but are leaving their positions from that unit.
“If they resigned, I’m exceptionally disappointed by it because it indicates to me that they did not see anything wrong with the actions last night,” Poloncarz said after being asked about the ERT Team resigning. pic.twitter.com/gbQ4Z7vKr5
