34th Mexican Mayoral Candidate Killed After Sharing Location On Facebook Live

Ahead of the June 6 legislative elections that will fill thousands of local seats and nearly half of the country’s governors, a 34th Mexican mayoral candidate has been killed after sharing her location on Facebook live.

On Tuesday (May 25), Alma Barragán, 61, was shot dead while campaigning for the mayorship of Moroleón, which sits in the violence-plagued state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. Two other people were reportedly injured. It’s said that after sharing her location on Facebook live, within a hour she was shot dead. Barragán became the 34th candidate murdered ahead of election day, and she was the 3rd nominee from the small Citizen’s Movement party to be killed in the past 15 days.

While speaking on the killing on Wednesday, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the murder was “without doubt” the work of organized criminal gangs, who are trying to scare voters away from the polls by killing candidates. He added, “When there is a lot of abstentionism, the mafias dominate the elections.”
