2 Killed, 1 Injured In Kenosha, Wisconsin After Shots Fired On Third Night Of Jacob Blake Protests
Protests continued for the third night in a row following the horrific police shooting of an unarmed black father, Jacob Blake. On Tuesday, many took the streets of Kenosha, Wisconsin, demanding justice for the 29-year-old who was shot eight times in the back by a cop after trying to break up a fight. The victim’s father says he is now paralyzed from the waist down.
During last night’s demonstrations, things turned violent as three people were shot; two fatally, with one injured, according to Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth. The third victim is said to be in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. While not many details were shared on this latest incident, the Sherrif explained that Kenosha Police and the FBI are now investigating what led to the shooting during the protests.
Beth also said people describing themselves as belonging to a militia had been patrolling Kenosha’s streets in recent nights but he did not know if the shooter was involved with such a group.
A state of emergency was approved by the Kenosha Common Council on Tuesday afternoon, according to ABC Wisconsin affiliate, WISN, which will be in place until Friday. As the news notes, curfew began at 8 p.m., in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Tuesday, and in videos shared on social media, police can be heard warning people move away from the courthouse where demonstrators had gathered.
This curfew came after several property was destroyed from the first and second protests. Beth warned protesters Tuesday night that they would not allow for destruction to continue. He also said while many are peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights, people from “outside” the community are coming in looking to loot and cause destruction.
“If you want to protest peacefully, by all means, go out and do it. It’s your right. But don’t be a part of this destructive force that’s burning our community. That’s not a productive path to justice,” Beth said in a statement Tuesday. “We are not sitting idly, watching the destruction of our community. We’re making every effort to make it stop, and I hope you will too.”
