An 18-year-old hairstylist has been arrested and charged with assault after a viral video shows her dragging a 15-year-old client for unpaid services, and now the traumatized teen has filed a lawsuit.
According to FOX 5 D.C., Prince George’s County hairstylist Jayla Cunningham has been charged with assault after she posted a video to social media showing her dragging her 15-year-old client.
In the viral video, viewers can hear Cunningham yelling at the teen, saying, “Sit right here until somebody sends it. I’m not f***ing playing. You just tried to f***ing run. You lucky I ain’t beat the s*ht out you.”
Maryland Hairstylist Claims 15-Year-Old Client Tried To Leave Without Paying For $150 Weave Service
According to the stylist, the 15-year-old was trying to leave without paying for a $150 service that included a weave. In the video, viewers can see her grab the girl and drag her by her hoodie before cutting the weave out of the teen’s hair with scissors.
The hairstylist and mother of the 15-year-old victim spoke exclusively with FOX 5’s Shomari Stone about the incident. Recalling the incident, Cunningham said:
“She ran. Forget trash, she ran without paying me. I dragged her by her hood back into the salon until I could get paid or, you know, until the police come or until, you know, she let me take out the service, because it’s like she literally ran outside. Like, she was about to be gone. I feel like if I didn’t do that, she would have been gone and I would have just never been paid.”
However, the 15-year-old’s mother told FOX 5 that Cunningham also grabbed her daughter’s hair when she went for her hood. The hairstylist ended up dragging her teen client through the salon by her head. She says her child is now traumatized. When asked how the teen is now doing, the mother said, “Not good at all.”
Following the incident, the teen’s mother filed a police report against Cunningham. She says her daughter accidentally sent the money to the wrong CashApp account. The teen’s mother also maintains that her daughter was trying to figure out how to correctly pay Cunningham and not ditch. She says, “It’s just absolutely absurd. It’s viral. It’s all over the country.”
Teen Dragged By Maryland Hairstylist Files Civil Lawsuit
Meanwhile, the teen’s family is planning to file a civil lawsuit against Cunningham. They have hired the Jackson and Associates law firm to represent the 15-year-old. The family’s attorney, De’Aja Thompson, says:
“The video is horrendous. It’s a 15-year-old girl. We’re talking about someone’s child here — a child who is being dragged across a salon floor by her jacket for over something as simple as a mistake.”
The hairstylist, who is facing a second-degree assault charge, claims she did not know she was being charged over the dragging incident. She has a summons to appear in court on April 18. Cunningham further says she plans to bring a witness to court to support her claims. She also claims she has been receiving death threats on social media and fears for her safety.
