As reported by the New York Post, all affected staffers received messages instructing them to stay home from work, marking one of the largest workforce reductions in the department’s history. “They will be teleworking from tomorrow until March 21st. Then all of that is being done for safety reasons to protect the 2,183 employees that are going to remain after the RIF is complete,” the official said in a statement.

Why Were 1,300 Employees Fired from the Department of Education?

Budget Cuts, Test Scores, and Federal Reform

According to government sources, budgetary concerns and student performance were major drivers behind the decision to fire 1,300 employees from the Department of Education. The administration pointed to the department’s multi-trillion-dollar spending history, suggesting it had failed to yield positive results.

“We’re going to have these folks roll over their responsibilities by Friday, March 21st. They will then go on paid administrative leave until the reduction in force is complete,” an official said in a public statement.

Additional details reveal that:

• Nearly 600 employees had already left through the Deferred Registration Program and a voluntary buyout package earlier this month.
• 63 probationary employees with less than one year of service were terminated last month.
• Staff receiving termination notices will receive 90 days of full pay and benefits, along with severance pay equal to one week’s salary for each year of service beyond 10 years.

DOE employees in Washington DC were also told that their office buildings would be closed Wednesday due to security reasons.
