12-Year-Old Boy Brain Dead & ‘Extremely Unlikely’ To Survive After Trying Viral TikTok Choking Challenge
Joshua Haileyesus, a 12-year-old boy, who was found unconscious in a bathroom on March 22 after trying a viral TikTok choking challenge is now brain dead and “extremely unlikely” to survive, says his GoFundMe page. On Monday (Mar. 22), the boy was discovered breathless on his bathroom floor by his younger twin brother, who tried to resuscitate him until neighbors and paramedics arrived.
The boy’s parents had no knowledge of their son playing this game called the “Blackout Challenge” — which we reported on back in January and has regained traction on the popular kids/teens app. Despite its resurfacing, this game is not new to the world, as it’s been around for years and also referred to as the “Passout Challenge,” “The Game of Choking,” “Speed Dreaming,” or “The Fainting Game.”

The boy, who is the eldest of four boys and is described as an “incredibly intelligent, funny, caring and gifted” boy with dreams of joining the Army and becoming a First Responder, is now left hospitalized and in critical condition. He’s currently being intubated and doctors say his chance for survival is extremely unlikely. The boy’s family says they are “devastated beyond belief of Joshua’s circumstance [and] are also concerned for other families not aware of the existence of the Blackout Challenge and others like it.” While they’re desperate to bring home their son, they’re also eager to warn other families.
