According to Fox 4 News, police in Baton Rouge say Caleb McCray and two other men, while wearing boxing gloves, punched the Southern University fraternity pledge member in the chest several times before he collapsed, had a seizure, and died.

The Wylie man was arrested and charged in Louisiana for the death of the fraternity pledge during a hazing ritual at a warehouse in late February. Police have now charged 23-year-old McCray with felony criminal hazing and manslaughter.

Investigators say McCray is only the first arrest in connection with the death of the 20-year-old Southern University student following the off-campus fraternity hazing ritual. During a press conference on Friday (March 7), Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse said:

“Detectives have interviewed over a dozen people and executed multiple search warrants to gather as much information as possible.”

As an investigation at the University continues, officials have paused all fraternity and sorority initiations. As we previously shared, in the early hours of February 26, Wilson, a junior engineering student and marching band member, was dropped off at the emergency by a group of men. They claimed he had collapsed while playing basketball at the park. Before officers arrived at the hospital, the group fled.

Officials later reported that the initial story told to them was a fabrication. Chief Morse has since confirmed:

“Caleb Wilson died as a direct result of a hazing incident where he was punched in the chest multiple times while pledging Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.”

Police say Wilson and eight other pledges arrived at a warehouse and changed into gray sweatpants. They then stood in a line “and were each punched four times with boxing gloves by at least three individuals.” Caleb McCray, a recent Southern University graduate, was one of the fraternity members. A police report says Wilson “appeared to suffer a seizure and lose control of his bodily function.” Police added that “Wilson’s clothing was changed prior to his arrival at the hospital,” where he later died.
