Billy Porter Slams Vogue Over Harry Styles Dress Cover: I Was The First One Doing It’

Billy Porter wants his credit!

The actor is slamming Vogue‘s December 2020 cover where Harry Styles became the first man to land a solo cover of Vogue, and where he graced the issue in a dress and tuxedo jacket. While speaking with The Sunday Times in a new interview, the Pose star admits that he was NOT here for the musician being praised for breaking gender norms, as Porter notes he was “the first one doing it.”

“I changed the whole game,” Porter told the outlet. “I. Personally. Changed. The. Whole. Game. And that is not ego, that is just fact. I was the first one doing it and now everybody is doing it.” He added, “I feel like the fashion industry has accepted me because they have to. I’m not necessarily convinced, and here is why,” the actor continued. “I created the conversation [about non-binary fashion] and yet Vogue still put Harry Styles, a straight white man, in a dress on their cover for the first time.”

In this case, Porter was the first to pop out with a dress before Harry Styles.
The 57-year-old wore a Tiffany green dress for the 25th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards at Barker Hangar Santa Monica airport on January 12, 2020 in Santa Monica, California. Styles appeared on Vogue in December that same year. Going back, Porter rocked a black tuxedo dress at the 2019 Vanity Fair Oscars party.

Despite that, Porter went on to make it clear that he was not coming for Styles. “I’m not dragging Harry Styles, but he is the one you’re going to try and use to represent this new conversation?” he asked. “He doesn’t care, he’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do. This is politics for me. This is my life. I had to fight my entire life to get to the place where I could wear a dress to the Oscars and not be gunned down. All he has to do is be white and straight.”
